Who we are

Castle Harlan, Inc is a middle market private equity firm founded in 1987. The firm has participated in eight private equity funds, five domestically and three in Australia, totaling over $5.5 billion in capital commitments. In 2010, Castle Harlan completed raising its fifth fund, Castle Harlan Partners V, L.P., with approximately $1 billion in committed capital. The firm has 14 investment professionals, who have been with the firm for an average of over 16 years.

Castle Harlan's domestic funds have purchased over 50 businesses, totaling more than $11 billion of enterprise value, primarily in North America, but also throughout the world, spanning a wide range of industries. Current and former portfolio companies have been in such industries as energy services, industrial manufacturing, specialty chemicals and certain consumer segments, among many others. Our current portfolio companies employ more than 36,000 people.

Examples of Castle Harlan’s portfolio companies include: Shelf Drilling – a leading international shallow water offshore jackup rig operator with a fleet of 37 independent-leg cantilever jackup rigs and one swamp barge; and Pretium Packaging – a leading US manufacturer of short run PET and HDPE plastic packaging primarily for food and personal care products.

A typical investment is characterized by significant market share, defensible market position, growth opportunities, consistent cash flow, and management with a proven track record. Castle Harlan is focused on building strong relationships with management teams and emphasizes equity incentive programs that align interests and create urgency for value creation. The firm is a control investor, engaged in improving growth, strategy, operations and profitability. The firm invests in Australia and Southeast Asia through its affiliate CHAMP Private Equity.


In 2000, Castle Harlan, Inc. co-founded Sydney based Castle Harlan Australian Mezzanine Partners (“CHAMP Private Equity”), the successor to one of Australia's oldest and largest private-equity investment firms dating back to 1987. Castle Harlan is a major shareholder in CHAMP Private Equity, which currently manages or advises over A$2.5 billion in funds for private-equity investment in the Australasian region, focused principally on middle-market buyouts. CHAMP Private Equity has approximately 25 professionals and a total staff of about 40 in Sydney and Singapore.
