NEWSLETTER June 2013

CEO'S NOTE

Dear [FirstName],

As we prepare AVCAL for a new membership year, I thought it appropriate to reflect on our achievements in the past 12 months and share with you the key issues around our current policy and advocacy work. Whether you are a fund manager, investor or a corporate member – this work is critical in ensuring we have a healthy and flourishing industry.

This short summary shows what we have achieved and have in train on each:

Effective Investment Vehicles
The Government announced in February that it would accept the Board of Tax's recommendations regarding the ES and VCLP. These were largely in line with our preferred updates to the program. We are working with the Opposition to ensure that they continue to also be supportive of the amendments.

Increased engagement with LPs - initiatives include:

  • AVCAL has formed a working group focused on improving our engagement with LPs.
  • AVCAL's first investor-only forum will take place next month.
  • We were deeply involved with the development of international, LP-led ESG Reporting Guidelines framework.

A sustainable VC industry

  • The Government agreed to the extension of the IIF program with an additional $350M and confirmed that future returns would be recycled. The improvements to the ES/VCLP are positive for the VC industry.
  • Improvements to taxation of employee share and option schemes are underway with both the Government and Opposition.

Improved perceptions of PE and VC
We have produced two key publications this year to enhance the understanding and perception of the asset class. These are:

In addition, we have had media roundtables to demystify the industry through the media and a continuation of the successful PE101 progam including a briefing in Parliament House for Government staffers.

Election campaign 2013
We continue to build on our very positive relationships with both sides of Parliament, so that regardless of the outcome of September 14, we will have a strong relationship with our policy makers.

We are pleased to announce the winners of the 2012-13 AVCAL VC Research Prize, Professor Douglas Cumming and Dr Sofia Johan of York University’s Schulich School of Business, for their paper on Venture’s Economic Impact in Australia. Submissions are now invited for the 2012-13 Research Prizes.
