Nominations for the 2013 Portfolio Company Awards

The Portfolio Company Awards aim to recognise and reward the achievements, vision and entrepreneurship of AVCAL GP members who have made the best use of private equity and venture capital in managing their investments.

Award categories

  • Best early stage
  • Best expansion stage
  • Best management buyout <$100m*
  • Best management buyout $100-500m*
  • Best management buyout > $500m*

*Best management buyout categories are based on enterprise value.


Judging Criteria

The AVCAL portfolio company awards are judged based on a number of key attributes of a portfolio company deal including the investment result and how the nominee GP added value to the company during its ownership.

Key attributes may include:

Deal sourcing (e.g. the bidding process);
Deal structure (e.g. innovative shareholding and/or debt structure);
Portfolio company operations (e.g. company restructure, staff incentives, expansion plans);
Exit strategy (e.g. multi-track exit process);
Significance of the exit performance on the overall fund;
Deal metrics (e.g. investment IRR, times money multiple, financial performance, contribution to the economy, product innovation, job creation).

Entry criteria

Be a current financial member of AVCAL;
Be authorised to provide the required information to AVCAL.

Nomination requirements

Ensure that the nominee portfolio company investment was made in the last ten years to 30 June 2013;
Ensure the nominee GP has realised at least 50% of the investment at cost from nominee portfolio company investment during FY2013;
Submit all required information on the nomination form via email;
Word answers need to be kept concise and to the point;
The person submitting the nomination form must be authorised to provide the information to the judging panel and to AVCAL;
Nominee submissions should be sent to AVCAL by 5pm on 31 July 2013.

Judging results

The winners of the AVCAL portfolio company award will be announced at the 2013 AVCAL alpha conference in September 2013.

Case-studies

AVCAL promotes the winners of the award categories by organising special “case-study” presentation events at various Australian cities over the course of the following 12 months. Nominees applying for the awards should confirm with AVCAL they agree to participate in the case-study events.
